A classic “getting ready” scene. Half the fun of going out in drag was hanging out with my girlfriends having cocktails and getting dressed.
Another influence on the comic was the groundbreaking documentary “Paris is Burning”. This view of the NYC drag balls was hugely inspiring to many of us. In San Francisco we didn’t really have balls like that, but it seemed like a good event to wrap the plot around. I also didn’t have much personal experience with queens of color, so the character of Shawna is based mostly on what I saw in the documentary. From the perspective of 2019 I’m a little uncomfortable portraying her with so little research. She’s just one of many cliches in the story, but she brings a lot to it.
